Maleny Trailblazers Newsletter March 2026

Maleny Trailblazers Newsletter March 2026

Welcome to the first Trailblazers newsletter of the year.

We are pleased to begin 2026 by welcoming three new members to the program. We look forward to seeing them become actively involved and to the contribution they will make, as well as the opportunities they will gain through participation.

February commenced with a planning meeting, setting the direction and priorities for the year ahead. In March, our first field activity brought Trailblazers, parents, and friends together for a visit to a Droughtmaster stud, which also included an agroforestry plantation. This provided a valuable opportunity to see both livestock production and integrated land use systems in practice.

The year ahead is shaping up to offer a wide range of practical, engaging, and rewarding experiences for all involved.

Trailblazer Member Stands Out

Our March tour took us to Glen and Kathy Honor’s Droughtmaster stud, where we gained valuable insights into cattle genetics and how the Droughtmaster breed is well suited to our local climatic conditions. Glen shared practical knowledge on breeding decisions and the role genetics plays in building a productive and resilient herd.

We were also fortunate to visit a 15-year-old agroforestry plantation on the property. Here, we learned how to prune and manage trees to support straight, high-quality growth for the forestry industry. Comparing this with a three-year-old plantation provided a clear understanding of growth progression over time.

The tour also included an overview of the history of the local area, including viewing the original crossing used for transport between Yandina and Gympie.

Overall, the visit provided a strong combination of livestock production, land management, and regional history.

New Members thoughts

Isabelle Moore “I really enjoyed the experience and found it both interesting and informative. It was a great opportunity to see things firsthand and learn more about the practical side of agriculture and the environment. One thing I found particularly fascinating was learning that Droughtmaster cattle have smaller internal organs compared to some other breeds, such as Charolais cattle. I found this interesting because it shows how different breeds are adapted to suit different climates and conditions, especially in hotter environments.

It helped me better understand why certain breeds are more suitable for certain regions.

I also enjoyed learning about the different types of trees and the role they play in the landscape. In addition, I found it very interesting to hear about the cultural aspects connected to the land and how these perspectives influence the way it is cared for. It was valuable to learn about both the environmental and cultural significance of the area.”

Looking Ahead – Join the Journey

Trailblazers is about learning by doing—building confidence, developing practical skills, and gaining real-world experience in agriculture, science, community, and leadership. It provides young people with the opportunity to step forward, try new things, and discover where their interests and strengths can take them.

Whether it is speaking in front of a group, visiting a farm, contributing to a community event, or exploring new ideas, every activity is designed to be supportive, practical, and engaging. Participants are encouraged to work at their own pace while being part of a team that values effort, curiosity, and initiative.

If you are a young person looking to get involved, or a parent interested in opportunities that build capability and confidence, Trailblazers offers a pathway to connect, contribute, and grow.

Trailblazers continues to grow through the involvement of its members, families, and community. Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far—the year ahead is well positioned to deliver valuable experiences and strong outcomes for all involved.
